From the desk of jun lim - why responsibility is not a trend

  • We were born to stand out, and that means standing up for what matters. Responsibility isn’t an add-on or a feel-good afterthought for us – it’s in our DNA.
In a world full of flashy gimmicks and corporate greenwashing (or clean-washing), the most rebellious act is to be genuinely responsible and brutally honest.

Our choices add up, and dishonesty will eventually be exposed. We don’t compromise. We don’t conform. We just do the right thing. Welcome to BORNTOSTANDOUT.

Here are the ‘right things’ we believe in:

  • We reject trendy buzzwords. You won’t hear us call ourselves “green,” “vegan,” or “clean,” nor will we slap pretentious virtue-signaling stickers on a token product. Responsible choices are already woven into everything we do—not for the sake of PR, but because it’s the only way forward.

Our thoughts on vegan claims – We are living in 2025, not 1995. Yes, we don't hurt animals, we use no animal-derived ingredients, and we are cruelty-free. But we refuse to market ourselves as "vegan" because it has become a misleading, marketing-driven label designed to manipulate consumers. (We have all the certifications you may ask for, but we don’t flaunt them.)

About clean beauty - “Clean beauty” is nothing more than a fear-based term used to manipulate consumers into thinking anything not labeled "clean" is dangerous. The truth? All legally sold cosmetics and fragrances undergo rigorous safety testing by regulatory agencies such as the FDA, European Commission, and IFRA. These organizations enforce strict safety standards, ensuring that all ingredients, whether synthetic or natural, meet scientific and toxicological evaluation criteria before they can be used in consumer products.

Similarly, "natural perfume" can be very misleading. Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it’s inherently safer. Many essential oils and botanical extracts contain known allergens and irritants, such as limonene, linalool, and eugenol, which are common causes of contact dermatitis and respiratory reactions. In fact, IFRA restricts and regulates the use of these naturally occurring compounds in fragrance formulations to ensure consumer safety.

A well-formulated synthetic ingredient, designed and produced in a controlled lab environment, can often be purer, more stable, and less likely to trigger allergies compared to raw natural extracts that contain a complex mix of compounds. The fear-mongering surrounding synthetic ingredients disregards decades of scientific advancements in fragrance safety and dermatology.

Instead of falling into this trap, we focus on responsible formulations backed by science and transparency. Marketing based on fear-mongering has no place in our industry. Quality, artistry, and responsibility should always come first.

  • We craft in small batches, not massive runs. This isn’t just about exclusivity or marketing—it significantly reduces waste. Small-batch craftsmanship ensures we’re never sitting on mountains of unsold stock destined for landfills. It also allows our perfumers and artisans to maintain strict attention to quality and consistency. If something’s not perfect, we catch it early, preventing unnecessary waste. Sustainability isn’t about buzzwords. It’s about intelligent decisions at every stage of production.

  • We proudly manufacture 100% in Korea, in an industry where many brands falsely label their products as “Made in France” to justify higher prices, even when most components, from bottles to packaging, are mass-produced in lower-cost manufacturing regions before being minimally processed or assembled in France. This misleading practice capitalizes on the allure of French craftsmanship while cutting costs by sourcing key elements from outsourced supply chains known for bulk production. The reality is that a simple “filled in France” stamp does not equate to true French manufacturing. At BORNTOSTANDOUT, we don’t play that game.

Every element of our product (except for the perfume oils, which are sourced globally for creative formulation) is made, filled, handled, packed, and shipped from Korea by skilled artisans who take pride in their work. No misleading claims. Just real craftsmanship.

  • Packaging is one of the biggest areas where a perfume brand can make an environmental impact. Every packaging decision we make has a tangible effect. By using responsible materials and thoughtful production, we’re reducing pollution and conserving resources. Here are our commitments.

Perfume caps: Made from recycled PETG (ECOTRIA®), an advanced, costly material not yet widely commercialized. We refuse to use heavy metal caps produced with cheap labor that are non-recyclable and destined for landfills.

Perfume pumps: Screwable and removable, unlike traditional pumps that make bottles unrecyclable. We already provide refills B2B and are working on the best consumer refill solution.

Perfume bottles: Partially made from recycled materials. While not yet 100%, we are committed to using the latest innovations.

Body-application products: All made from recycled PETG.

Secondary packaging: Mono-material, FSC-certified recycled paper, printed with soy ink. No plastic inserts, no unnecessary fluff. Biodegradable wraps (for applicable/required countries).

These commitments are not cheap—they are a costly but necessary investment in the future. We take full responsibility for the footprint we leave.

  • We believe in underpromising and overdelivering. At BORNTOSTANDOUT, that means giving you the real beauty of this industry—without shortcuts, without gimmicks. We don’t play the numbers game or inflate claims just to sound impressive. Instead, we focus on using the highest-quality materials in the highest possible amounts.

Eau de Parfum? Most brands stick to 15-20%, but we set our minimum at 30-35%. Extraits? Typically, they’re 25-30%, but ours start at 50-60%. No unnecessary fillers, no marketing tricks, just the best ingredients, used in their most creative and powerful form. If something makes a fragrance more original, more beautiful, we use it. No matter the cost.

Because at the end of the day, we’re not here to sell hype. We’re here to create something extraordinary, something that is born to stand out.

  • This is our approach—no gimmicks, no misleading claims, just real responsibility, innovation, and artistry. If you have questions or ideas on how we can push this even further, our door is always open. Being born to stand out means never settling for the status quo.Together, we can keep raising the bar for what responsible luxury should be. If you want to be part of this movement, welcome aboard.
